Energy and Infrastructure
Mastering complex energy systems and grid infrastructure through domain-specific MBSE - ensuring compliance with IEEE 1547, IEC 61508, and IEC 61513 safety and interconnection standards.
Energy infrastructure is becoming more complex to engineer. Grid modernization, renewable integration, distributed energy resources, and advanced nuclear each involve large numbers of system components and operational requirements that must be managed across multi-disciplinary teams.
Enola has provided MBSE consulting to organisations in the energy sector. This includes a provider of grid-scale battery energy storage systems, working to model and manage the engineering complexity of large-scale energy infrastructure. For energy engineering teams, a model-based approach provides the traceability and configuration management that regulatory standards require.
Challenges
Key engineering challenges in energy and infrastructure systems
Energy systems require long-term operational stability and strict adherence to mandates like grid interconnection, functional safety, and nuclear control. These standards demand a level of traceability and configuration management that legacy, document-led engineering cannot reliably sustain over multi-decade lifecycles.
Enola provides the model-based infrastructure designed to bridge this gap. We transition teams to a dynamic environment where regulatory rigour and safety-critical alignment are built directly into the design, ensuring an authoritative source of truth from initial concept.

MBSE in Practice - Energy and Infrastructure

NAAREA micro-reactor (Dassault Systèmes, n.d.c)
NAAREA, a French startup developing a 4th generation micro-reactor (the XAMR), built the virtual twin of its reactor from the ground up in 18 months on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform - validating architecture, size, and functionality across all subsystems before a physical prototype was built. The virtual twin centralises all design, engineering, and manufacturing data, and will be used to manage the reactor throughout its operational lifecycle.

Grid infrastructure - DER evaluation
For conventional grid infrastructure, MBSE enables systematic evaluation of configuration options before physical changes are committed - modelling DER integration scenarios, assessing control system interfaces, and evaluating performance implications in the model rather than on the asset.
STANDARDS
Regulatory and Standards Landscape
Standard for Interconnection and Interoperability of Distributed Energy Resources with Associated Electric Power Systems Interfaces. Enola models DER interface requirements within SysML architecture models for grid-connected systems
Functional Safety of Electrical/Electronic/Programmable Electronic Safety-related Systems. Enola implements SIL assessment and functional safety requirement development using RAAML within CATIA Magic
Nuclear — Instrumentation and control systems important to safety. General requirements for systems. Enola's functional safety capability extends to nuclear instrumentation and control system architecture
Quality Management Systems requirements. Enola's engineering process and deliverable quality standards align to ISO 9001 requirements for client-facing engagements
Business Process Modeling Notation — used via Cameo Business Modeler for operational process capture, workflow design, and the modelling of operational and maintenance procedures
"Energy infrastructure has long operational lifetimes. MBSE provides the structured documentation, traceability, and configuration management to support engineering decisions at design time - and to maintain an accurate record of those decisions throughout the asset's life."
